I prefer to have at least a Q as one of them, but it can work even if you just have 9-10. The higher the trump the better (obviously), but this can even work with Q-10-9. Keep an eye out for an up-card that will give you any 3 trump and allow you to discard such that you are void in 2 suits. This also helps avoid having your trump drawn out by your partner.ģ Trump, 2 suited - This works best when playing from the dealer seat, but can be successful from other positions as well. Since your partner called it, they should be in a position to play the highest trump and gain control of the rest of the hand. Assuming you do win the trick, hit 'em with the low trump. You'll either win the trick outright, or at least draw out a large trump from the player to your left. High-Low - If, on the other hand, you're in the same situation as above, and the player to your right leads an Ace or King, and you hold 2 trump, go ahead and trump with the biggest trump you have. Worst case would be your left hand opponent taking the trick, but that would still leave you with and end play on the second trick, which is always to your advantage. They might have the Ace, or be able to trump themselves. Your partner's got the end play, give them a chance to do some damage here. You run the risk of being over trumped, and that could be the beginning of the end. You've ordered up trump from 2 nd and your right hand opponent leads an offsuit 9 in a suit you're void in. There is a very good chance your partner will be able to take this trick on his own, either with the Ace, or by trumping in, and you'll still have your trump available, maybe to take out the Ace of your newly voided suit.ĮDIT: Ok, scratch that one. This is particularly true when you only have one trump and will not have anything appropriate to lead back. If the First seat leads a low offsuit, don't immediately trump. I think the most basic situation you'll use this is when your partner is the dealer and names trump (especially in the first round when playing Screw The Dealer). Second Hand Low - There are a number of situations you may want to play this way - ultimately this is a way to try to maximize the help you get from your partner by giving them a chance. You may be able to use it later to take a trick outright, or at the very least draw out trump. Promote - When you've got 2 (or maybe even 3) cards of a suit, it can be to your advantage to lead the lower one in order to draw out the higher ranking cards of that suit. Ideally, you want to keep track of every single card played, but I'll admit I still don't do that very well. Try your best to be aware of what the boss cards are in each suit. Next is keeping track of what trump have been played. Most of these are things I've picked up from books or websites, I'm not claiming ownership of anything here.Just thought it might be nice to see some of this stuff in one place, and get some feedback.Ĭount Trump - At the absolute minimum, you need to count how many trump have been played. What are the things you look for? The calls you'll make? The little tips and tricks you've learned or developed?
